Intro

Figured I'd give blogging another go since i'm kinda bored right now. For those people who may stumble upon this  blog I am a 2nd year student at Victoria University of Wellington in New Zealand studying Software Engineering. I'm pretty happy with how I'm progressing so far through my degree and my goal is to do well enough to gain the attention of Google and get an internship at the end of this year.

I believe that one of the key differences between myself and other students here are that many do the assignments we get and accept that that's all the programming they need to do to pass their degree, I on the other hand like to build on what I learn by building my own projects using the knowledge from Uni and also things I pick up from researching on the internet. Thus far I am a pretty strong Java Programmer (Its the main language we use at Uni), I have just started learning some C in a Network Engineering course I am doing this Trimester, I am doing some C# in a Information Systems course and will be starting some Python in a few weeks time.  On top of the languages that we use at Uni I am also trying to teach myself Ruby and specifically the Ruby Gem Ruby on Rails.

I guess if I continue writing this blog I will use it to blurt my thoughts on projects onto a source for those interested to read and also for my own use of keeping track of what sort of things I'm working on. I think the latter is kind of important since I seem to be good at starting a personal project and then getting hit by an assignment which makes me neglect to ever go back to those projects.

I've never made a successful blog before so I'm not sure on its full potential but I'm supposing people can comment on posts and it would be cool to have a following that can give feedback on ideas i have especially if any of my projects I start are games as I'm a strong believer that the best game is a community driven game and I would love to come up with an idea that would allow the players to help me as a developer build it into something that everyone really likes. I'm also supposing you can follow a blog and if that is the case I am going to promise to those who do read this that if you "follow" this blog then I won't spam you with a load of off topic bull since I can't stand that myself, part of the reason I don't enjoy using too much social media...

I'll probably wrap this up soon so to finish off I'll give a few things that I've been working on to give some of you an idea what I'm interested in developing:
  • Java IRC Bot - I created a IRC bot using Java a few months ago that was specifically built for a game I play that utilizes IRC for communication between players, the Bot was built to make life easier for when we were trying to execute attacks in-game and is still in use all the time. (IRC stands for Internet Relay Chat)
  • Unnamed platformer - I started a platformer a while ago but got distracted by Uni before I could really make anything solid, so I guess its only use now is a framework that I can use if I ever go down that road again.
  • Turret Defence Game - A bit like my platformer I started a game where you control a turret in the middle of a town and "militia" try to reach it to destroy it and the player has to rotate the turret and shot to fend off the militia, I got the turret rotating and started on the militia AI before Uni started up again and I hit a wall in the development. I may go back to this one day....
  • Android Game - I am really keen to build a game on Android, I've built a framework on which to build the game but I am now just awaiting a spark of inspiration to get me started on an idea, hopefully this will come soon... My friends at Uni have also expressed interest in Android Dev so may be something we look at doing in a small team.
  • Little things - On top of my main projects above I have also built a few tools for myself to use in my development, some of which I have only ended up using once but I guess they are always there in case I need them....
I guess I'll leave it there for today, might look at writing something tonight, got a pretty busy day today, 1 software lab, 2 software lectures and a network lecture.
